The calm tropical waters that surround Fitzroy Island are just perfect for snorkelling. There are a number of beaches you can snorkel from including Welcome Bay and Nudey Beach (both are just minutes from the main arrival area), with hard and soft corals only meters from the shore.

As you descend into the amazing underwater world you be greeted by an abundance of sea life including Clown Fish (like Nemo), gropers, cods and many Sea Turtles. In fact Fitzroy Island has it’s very own Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Centre that you can visit whilst on the island.

These fringing reefs that surround Fitzroy Island are all part of the World Heritage Listed Great Barrier Reef so the colours and variety of corals is absolutely world class.

The Fitzroy Island Resort has full hire for many different activities on the island, including snorkelling. You can hire a mask and snorkel for the day for only $12 for the day.  You can also hire fins and floatation vests as well!

The Fitzroy Island Sports Hub also has lots of other equipment available for hire such as:

Take part in our Marine Conservation Program on Fitzroy Island and assist our team and two non for profit organisations, the Cairns Turtle Rehabilitation Centre & Reef Restoration Foundation. Contribute to the preservation, protection and rehabilitation of fragile marine ecosystems and threatened marine species of the Great Barrier Reef.

A 45-minute Fitzroy Flyer ride will get you from Cairns to Fitzroy Island and back for your stay or day trip to Fitzroy.

- Check-In: Staff members, Commuters & Contractors are not required to check-in at the Fitzroy Island Booking Centre unless they have not received via e-mail their unique QR codes for boarding. If QR codes have not been received, please check-in with the team at the Fitzroy Island Booking Centre (Shop 2/1 Spence st) at least 30-minutes prior to departure to collect your tickets. Boarding commences 30 minutes prior to departure at Marlin Wharf Berth 20. Ensure your ticket & QR code is presented upon boarding.
- Luggage: We can store your luggage if you check-in early however you will need to come back to collect and take it to the transfer.
Fitzroy Island to Cairns:  Please make your way directly to the jetty at least 15 minutes prior to the transfer departure time. Ensure your ticket & QR code is presented upon boarding.

There are two types of ‘stingers’ in the area: the Irukandji Jellyfish and the Box Jellyfish. They might be present year-round, but there is a higher risk between October and May where jellyfish can be found around the mainland, islands and occasionally the reef.

By taking some simple precautions to minimise risk you can safely and comfortably swim around Fitzroy Island. When snorkelling or swimming, please wear protective ‘stinger suits’.
